Washington, DC – Enrollment for Spring and Summer Programs at Isabella & Ferdinand Spanish Language Adventures, a Spanish language program for children in Washington, DC is now open.
The Spring Session curriculum of the program will focus on teaching children Spanish language fundamentals while learning about some of the most important cultural “heroes” from Spanish and Latin American culture—artists and poets such as Pablo Picasso, Fernando Botero, Joan Miro, Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dali, Rafael Pombo and others. As with all Spanish language programs at Isabella & Ferdinand, children will be immersed in the Spanish language by engaging inreading, singing, painting and other activities related to a different theme each week. The Spring Session is 10 weeks long and will run from April5 to June 12 2010.
For the Summer, Isabella & Ferdinand will be offering its regular weekly Spanish classes as well as Spanish Language Immersion “Courtly Camps”. For 3-5 year olds, the camp will consist of 2-week sessions of Castilian Capers, a half-day program. Children will gather every day Monday-Friday from 9:00 am to12:00 pm. Children will start their day in Palisades Park where they will engage in athletic games and activities such as soccer and tag, as well as traditional games played in Latin America and Spain. While outdoors, they will also learn vocabulary regarding their environment; special activities may include harvesting and launching Mexican Monarch mariposas (butterflies), and making cometas (kites) bearing the colors of different Latin American flags. At the conclusion of outdoor time, children will be escorted back to Isabella & Ferdinand for snack time (sampling a Spanish or Latin American treat once a week), linguistic activities and games, dress up-play, singing and arts and crafts, all related to Spanish and Latin American culture.
For older children (6-9 year olds), Isabella & Ferdinand will offer a summer camp program called Cervantes in the Park. The program will run Monday-Friday from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.In this Spanish immersion half-day camp, kids will learn their Spanish basics by reading and role-playing from some of the greatest works of literature, theatre and poetry from the Spanish language cannon, having fun donning costumes and re-enacting scenes from works by Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Lorca, Ruben Dario, Rafael Pombo and others. Children will have fun learning Spanish through acting and dress up, directing and set design. The first part of each class will take place in Palisades Park and the second part will be on-site at Isabella & Ferdinand.
In both Courtly Camp summer programs, children will be in a Spanish immersion setting at all times. Small classes sizes and a 1:4 teacher student ratio will ensure a customized experience for both bilingual and non-bilingual children. There is a maximum 10 children permitted per class per session. The camps will have three 2-week sessions which will run from June 21-July 30.
Regular weekly classes at Isabella & Ferdinand during the summer will follow a different schedule than those offered during the year.Children can either engage in a six-week session of Spanish immersion classes which combine linguistic learning with exposure to Spanish and Latin American culture or a 4 week session of classes on Saturdays. The classes will also run from June 21-July 30.
