Arlington, VA - Brimming with authentic foods, crafts and top Tango and folkloric performers direct from Argentina, the 25th Annual ARGENTINE FESTIVAL takes place on SATURDAY (4:00pm) MAY 19, 2012, at Thomas Jefferson Community Center & Theater, 125 South Old Glebe Road, in Arlington, Virginia. Highlights include two U.S. Debuts: young folk singer, TAIS, and the ensemble SON ELLAS, with which both conquered the Cosquín 2012 festival with their fresh fusion of folk, Latin rhythms and ballads. DANIEL BOUCHET, presenting Tango Argentino in English, French and Spanish. MIGUEL DURÉ, Rio Platense’s acclaimed folk singer, and the internationally renowned VICTORIO MENGHI. This event marks the U.S. Debut of TAIS , the captivating -singer/songwriter of inspired love songs like “Luna Witness” or “I will tell the fate”. One of his songs will represent Argentina in the famous Vińa del Mar Festival in Chile. Among his influences are other from his home province, such as Los Chalchaleros, Los Cantores del Alba, Los Fronterizos, Los Nocheros among others. This also marks the U.S. Debut of SON ELLAS a young vocal trio that addresses current social issues in their lyrics.
This event marks the Second U.S. Tour of Miguel Duré, songwriter and guitarist, born in Fray Bentos, Uruguay. A "cross over" artist, if you will, popular on both sides of the Rio de la Plata, Duré honors the Bicentennial of the River Plate, performing the music of Alfredo Zitarrosa. In 1989 he recorded "Heart of Stone" and then "Song Time". In June 2011, he released his fourth album "MILONGAS WAY" Duré frequently performs with artists such as Alfredo Abalos, Rafael Amor, Julio Victor Gonzalez, Teresa Parodi, Nacha Roldán, Altamirano, Los de Salta among many others. His show, "Postcards from Rio de la Plata" toured throughout Argentina, concluding at the Centro Cultural Borges.
Pampa Cortés, a former principal dancer of “Forever Tango” has enjoyed a 50 year career as a professional dancer. His clean footwork and elegant masculinity have inspired thousands of people, encouraging them to achieve greater skill in their own dance. ALERT: All Pampa Cortés’s workshops are Sold Out! But Pampa and Gigi Jensen will perform several dances at the festival, including: La Cumparsita, Danzas Criollas, Chacarera and the spirited Malambo, which utilizes the “boleadoras”, originally a hunting instrument. Through his project Tango Fusion, Victorio Menghi invests the venerable Tango genre with the contemporary edge of profound lyrics and multi-media elements. This project has had the participation of many of the greatest figures in popular music and Tango Argentino, such as Nito Mestre, Beba Pugliese, Miguel Cantilo, Omar Mollo, Raul Porchetto, Silvio Soldan and Juan Carlos Cuacci among others. He is presenting the Tango Music World Tour in Brazil, Colombia and USA.
Additional performers include the Cristian Perez ‘Dale Project,’ a guitar ensemble that interprets Tango in a fresh, elegant, and passionate way, and draws heavily upon the repertoire of the great Astor Piazzolla ; Cantoral TR3S showcases the best of Argentine and Latin American Folklore and celebrates the great Argentine poets. The well-known local Capital Tangueros Dancers round out the program, including dancers Tino and Susan judging a tango contest; a tribute to dancers Pablo Fontana and Anne-Sophie Ville” by Capital Tangueros; and Patricio Lizárraga and his Latin Dancers. Also featured is an exhibition that allows viewing music, arts and crafts, jewelry makers, tourism, books, truco and comic designers by illustrator César Carrizo, in Homage to the Bicentennial of Uruguay.
