Washington, D.C. – The following is a statement from Councilmember David Grosso (I-At Large), chairperson of the Committee on Education:

"I am extremely disappointed in the actions of Deputy Mayor Jennifer Niles and Chancellor Antwan Wilson regarding the discretionary placement process. I appreciate that the catalyst for this transfer was what the Chancellor believed was in the best interest of his child. Still, this was a huge mistake.

"I welcome the resignation of Deputy Mayor Niles, who orchestrated the transfer of the Chancellor's child in violation of the policy set forth by the Mayor.  I will also be discussing the matter with the Mayor, the Office of the Inspector General, and my colleagues.

"From graduation rate accountability to closing the achievement gap, to supporting our students' non-academic needs, there are a number of critical issues that face our school system. I fully intend to examine these issues, as well as the chancellor's recent actions as part of the DCPS performance oversight hearing scheduled for March 1."
