WASHINGTON, DC – At each of 10 Regional Youth Awards Ceremonies this fall, a parent or set of parents will be recognized as recipients of the newly established Pearson Parent Award in honor of the pivotal role parents play in the educational success of Latino youth. Parents will be nominated by more than 200 recipients of the prestigious Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards who are selected from up to 20,000 applicants as rising seniors across the United States and Puerto Rico. Applications for the 19th Annual Youth Awards presented by the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) are still available at www.hispanicheritage.org and must be submitted no later than October 15, 2017.

The 2017 Youth Awards regional ceremonies will take place in November and December at top universities in the following cities: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Phoenix, San Jose, and Washington, DC. Influential audiences and speakers will attend the ceremonies to recognize and honor the students and their families. In each of the ceremonies, the Pearson Parent Award will be presented. Students are invited to nominate their parent(s) in the region nearest to their area of residence. Following the Youth Awards Regional Ceremonies, one national recipient will be recognized and celebrated at the National Youth Awards [in January 2018] with celebrities.

“Parental involvement is critical to the educational success of our community,” said Jose Antonio Tijerino, President and CEO of the Hispanic Heritage Foundation. “Through the Parent Award, we want to highlight the parents and have them share in the outstanding accomplishments of their children as well as serve as sources of inspiration to other parents in their communities. We are grateful to Pearson for recognizing the importance role all parents play in supporting the brilliant young minds we need to move our country forward.”

“We are honored to support the 2017 Youth Awards and pay tribute to the Latino parent community,” said Maria Alexandra Velez Henao, Vice President of International Government Relations at Pearson. “We understand that all parents are unified by a common desire to do what’s best for their children and we recognize the crucial role they play as often their child’s first and most important teachers. At Pearson, we strive to help children and adults make progress in their lives through learning and we are excited to spotlight such inspirational role models from the Latino community.”
