New York City, NY - The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced today the election of Candace K. Beinecke and Hamilton ("Tony") E. James as the Co-Chairs of its Board of Trustees, effective January 12, 2021, accepting the recom mendation of a committee appointed by the Board last spring and chaired by Trustee Alejandro Santo Domingo. Mrs. Beinecke and Mr. James are succeeding Daniel Brodsky, who served as Chairman of the Board for over nine years. Mr. Brodsky's term was set to expire in September 2020 but was extended in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Met Board appointed an 11-member committee of Trustees in the spring of 2020 to recommend the next Board Chair following the end of Mr. Brodsky's third, three-year term. Mr. Santo Domingo, who is also Chair of The Met's External Affairs Committee, said: "We are extremely fortunate to have a Board composed of such exceptional leaders. Candace and Tony possess a record of service at both The Met and in a wide variety of institutions that is extraordinary, and I am thrilled for The Met that they are ready to extend and expand their service to the Museum."
The Board also voted to lengthen the Trustee Chair's term from three to five years. Mr. Brodsky commented, "It is truly the honor of a lifetime to have served as Chairman of the Board. The Met is the preeminent museum it is for one simple reason: the hard work and commitment of its staff and Board. Candace and Tony are highly accomplished in their respective professions, experienced leaders of philanthropic institutions, and, most importantly, passionate about The Met's mission. With Candace and Tony leading the Board, and President Dan Weiss and Director Max Hollein leading the staff, The Met will continue to thrive."

Candace Beinecke, an attorney who is currently Senior Partner of the global law firm Hughes Hubbard & Reed, was elected as a Met Trustee in 2010. She has served as Chair of its Legal Committee since 2011, and was Co-Chair of the search committee that recommended current Met Director Max Hollein. Her philanthropic leadership has included serving on a variety of non-profit boards, including as Vice Chair of the Partnership for New York City, as Chair of The Wallace Foundation, and as a board member of Jacob's Pillow. She shared, "I am deeply honored and grateful for this next role at The Met. The Met brings us the best of human culture and creativity. I witness every day how it serves its local and global audiences. With Tony as a partner and the wisdom and dedication of our fellow Board members, I look forward to doing all we can to support the brilliant, inspiring Met staff in continuing to realize the Museum's ambitious and important mission." |

Tony James was also elected as a Trustee in 2010. He has been Chair of the Museum's Finance Committee since 2014. He too has a wide range of philanthropic leadership roles, including at the Wildlife Conservation Society, Mount Sinai Health System, the Center for American Progress, and the American Ballet Theatre. He said, "As a New Yorker and a parent, I can say that The Met has always been an integral part of my life. Working with Candace to help the Museum navigate its road ahead is both a wonderful opportunity and a great responsibility. Now more than ever, New York and the world need a strong Met."

Candace Beinecke
A graduate of New York University and Rutgers University, Mrs. Beinecke is Senior Partner of the global law firm Hughes Hubbard & Reed. She joined the firm in 1970, became a partner in 1979, and served as the firm's chair from 1999 until 2017; her election as chair made her the first woman to lead a major New York City law firm.
Elected as a Met Trustee in 2010, Mrs. Beinecke serves as Chair of the Trustee Legal Committee; Chair of the Paintings Conservation Visiting Committee; a Member of the Visiting Committee for the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts; a Member of the Visiting Committee for the Department of European Paintings; and a Business Committee Member. She previously served on the Watson Library's Visiting Committee.
In addition to serving on The Met's Board, Mrs. Beinecke serves on the boards of ViacomCBS; Vornado Realty Trust, where she is the lead independent trustee; and First Eagle Funds, where she is the board chair. She is chair of The Wallace Foundation, which supports the arts and education; a director of the Partnership for New York City; and a trustee emerita of Jacob's Pillow. She serves on the board of advisors of the Yale Law School Center for the Study of Corporate Law.
Mrs. Beinecke's husband, Frederick W. Beinecke II, is an investor. He concluded his term as President of the National Gallery of Art last year. They have two children. |

Tony James
Hamilton ("Tony") E. James is Executive Vice Chairman of Blackstone, and a member of Blackstone's board of directors. Mr. James previously served for 15 years as Blackstone's President and Chief Operating Officer. Prior to joining Blackstone in 2002, Mr. James was Chairman of Global Investment Banking and Private Equity at Credit Suisse First Boston and a member of the executive board, and Chairman of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette's Banking Group.
Mr. James is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Costco Wholesale Corporation and has served on a number of other corporate boards.
He is actively involved in many charitable organizations in addition to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, serving as Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Mount Sinai Health System, member of the Center for American Progress Board of Trustees, Vice Chairman of Trout Unlimited's Coldwater Conservation Fund, Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Wildlife Conservation Society, Advisory Board member of The Montana Land Reliance, Advisory Council member of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, and Advisory Board member of the Max S. Baucus Institute at the University of Montana. In addition, he is Chairman of The Education Finance Institute, an organization he founded to develop cost effective solutions to finance higher education and to support Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He is a former member of the President's Export Council, a former commissioner of The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Trustees of American Ballet Theatre.
In 2018, Mr. James co-authored the second edition of Rescuing Retirement, a book proposing a solution to America's looming retirement crisis. The first edition was published in 2016. He has also published numerous articles in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Harvard Business Review, and other major publications.
Mr. James graduated magna cum laude with a BA from Harvard College in 1973 and was a John Harvard Scholar. He earned an MBA with high distinction from the Harvard Business School and graduated as a Baker Scholar in 1975.
His wife, Amabel Boyce ("Amie") James, is actively involved in philanthropy focusing on education. They have three children.
