Washington, DC - A good vacation can change your life…Reme, Vicente, Laura and Pablo are two couples who have spent 25 years vacationing together. One night, after a few drinks and a few too many words, Reme confesses how all of their lives might have been different. The next morning, Lola's life has indeed changed.

GALA is proud to open its 39th season with the Washington, DC premiere of Cancún, a hilarious and brisk comedy. Directed by José Zayas, who previously directed House of the Spirits, the show will run from September 11, 2014 until October 5, 2014. GALA is located at 3333 14th Street NW, Washington, DC 20010. Discounted parking is available at the Giant parking lot on Park Road, NW.

“I feel especially enthusiastic to open our new season with this smart comedy by Jordi Galcerán because it will bring to our stage the work of one of Spain's most international young playwrights alongside one of the most creative young Latino directors in the US,” states Artistic Director Hugo Medrano. The renowned director Jose Zayas last worked at GALA on the remarkable adaptation of House of the Spirits by Caridad Svich.

In Galceran's best style, the dramatic situations in Cancun slide imperceptibly from truth to fiction, leaving the audience to guess at whether Lola's desires have come true in reality or just in her Imagination. Do we have the life we desired? Are we truly satisfied? Have we taken the reigns of our  Destiny or have we let ourselves be led by chance?

Cancún will be presented in Spanish with English surtitles (translated by Anne García-Romero) fromThursday to Saturday at 8pm, with matinees on Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm.

The Noche de GALA and Press Opening will be Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 8pm, under the generous patronage of the Ambassador of Spain to the United States, His Excellency Ramón Gil-Casares. There will be a reception following the show.

ABOUT PLAYWRIGHT JORDI GALCERAN

From the enormous success of his The Grönholm Method (El método Grönholm) in 2003 through his most recent production of The Bank Loan (El crédito, 2013), that just won him the CERES prize for Best Playwright at the 2014 Festival de Teatro de Mérida (Spain), Galcerán has not stopped hypnotizing audiences with his comedies, capable of drawing forth laughter even when unpacking complex social problems.

Galcerán studied Catalan philology at the University of Barcelona and in 1988 began writing for the stage. In 1995, he submitted two plays for consideration at theatre festivals: Paraules encadenadas/Palabras encadenadas won the X Premio Born de Teatro (Spain) and Dakota won the Premio Ignasi Iglésias from the Institut del Teatre de la Diputación of Barcelona. Other produced plays include Surf (1990), Fuita/Fuga (1994), the musical comedy Gaudi (2002), Carnaval (2005), Cancún (2007) and Burundanga (2011).

Galcerán has also translated and adapted various plays, and has worked as a screenwriter for several TV series, as well as writing the screenplay for six feature-length films. Broadway producer Jeffrey Richards has bought the rights to Galcerán's celebrated El método Grönholm. Richards has produced the Broadway runs of The Homecoming, by Harold Pinter, August: Osage County, by Tony-award winner Tracy Letts, as well as productions of several David Mamet plays, such as the political satire November.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

The ensemble for Cancún includes guest artist Chani Martín from Madrid (Spain), Luz Nicolás and Carlos Castillo (the three previously appeared to great acclaim in last season's Cabaret Barroco) and Maggie Bofill, who will be making her GALA debut as a guest artist and is well-known for her distinguished work in various off-Broadway theatres in New York and as a founding member of The Labyrinth Theatre Company member.

Director José Zayas, originally from Puerto Rico, last directed House of the Spirits at GALA two seasons ago, which received a Helen Hayes nomination for Best Scenic Design. He has directed over 60 plays in New York, regionally and internationally. Among those are included the premiere production of House of the Spirits, Love in the Time of Cholera, In the Time of Butterflies at Repertorio Español, and P.S. Jones and Frozen City and Feeder: A love Story, with TerraNOVA Collective.

Scenic designer is Mariana Fernández who has been designing for GALA from her 2002 work on Laverdad sospechosa by Tirso de Molina, until her most recent designs for Puro Tango I y II; Joseph Walls, who also designed both productions of Puro Tango, will be design lights; Robert Croghan (Costume Assistant for GALA’s Cabaret Barroco and La senorita de Tacna) is Costume Designer; Kenny Neal is Sound Designer, and Alicia Tessari is Props Designer. Ártemis López is Technical Director, Anna Bate is Production Manager, and Hugo Medrano will produce.

TICKET INFORMATION

Individual tickets are $38 on Thursday, Saturday Matinees, and Sundays; $42 on Friday and Saturday night. Senior tickets are $26 and Students/Military are $20. Additional discounts are available for groups of 10 or more. Noche de GALA tickets (including reception) are $50/person, $90/couple, and $15 for donors.
