Washington, DC - Don’t miss the world premiere of The Old Man, the Youth, and the Sea opening February 7! Written by Irma Correa from the Canary Islands, and directed by 2016 Helen Hayes Awards winner José Luis Arellano, The Old Man, the Youth, and the Sea reflects today’s authoritarianism and censorship through a confrontation of ideas between the great Spanish philosopher Miguel de Unamuno, young fisherman Cisco, a journalist, and a military representative of Primo de Rivera’s dictatorship.

Miguel de Unamuno represents reason and the criticism of the arbitrariness of power. Cisco, played by Spanish actor Víctor De La Fuente, is the hope of a better future.

The Old Man, the Youth, and the Sea “is about life itself; it speaks to a life that is beginning and one that nears its end. It’s also about freedom and the two Spains that we have carried around since the 20th century. Cisco and Unamuno represent two worlds that collide, interact, and grow together,” states De La Fuente.

De la Fuente is making his debut in the United States. He has performed primarily in Spain with La Joven Compañía. Among the numerous roles he has played, his favorites are Simon in The Lord of the Flies and William in Punk Rock. “The first one,” says the Spanish actor, “because the cast went through a magical process and adventure full of hope, and the second one because the play by Simon Stephens is a masterpiece whose main character William makes you fly high and think hard, like few characters I have ever seen.”

Playing Cisco has been a revelation for De La Fuente. According to him, they both share certain qualities such as kindness, love of nature, joy, and innocence. This has informed his approach to the character and has made clear what he wants Cisco to convey to the audience: “The importance of dreams and their fragility, and the yearning for knowledge and life,” concludes De la Fuente.

Don’t miss The Old Man, the Youth, and the Sea from February 7 through March 3. Presented in Spanish with English surtitles, performances are Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 pm, and Sundays at 2 pm.

Scenic and Costume designs are by Silvia de Marta* from Madrid, who won a 2016 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Set Design for Yerma. Lighting and Sound Designs are by Jesús Díaz*.
