Life of Francisco Rigores Celebrated 1940-2019

Washington, DC -The legendary Cuban rumba singer and director of the Cuban Folkloric Group “Los Invasores de los 80” died on December 9, 2019. Francisco Rigores was considered a local celebrity and master of Afro-Cuban music and dance.

After arriving in Washington, DC in the 1980’s, Rigores helped form the Los Invasores, which recorded an album for the Smithsonian’s Folkways label. Rigores lived in the Adams Morgan, Mount Pleasant and Columbia Heights neighborhoods for the past four decades. For over three decades, he performed with various Cuban, Latin and Jazz groups in metro DC, including GALA Theatre. He could be seen every Sunday at Meridian / Malcolm X Park singing, playing and dancing Rumba at the Afro-Cuban drum circle.

His life was celebrated this past Sunday at GALA Theatre in a commemorative community gathering.
