WASHINGTON, D.C. (CapitalWirePR) August 26, 2008-- The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) today announced details of its 2008 Public Policy Conference, part of its annual Hispanic Heritage Month events. Hispanic Members of Congress and prominent Latino experts and national leaders will participate in more than 30 separate events taking place on September 8-9, 2008, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Washington, D.C., under the theme The Power to Make the Difference.
“This is an historic moment in our nation’s history,” said Congressman Joe Baca (CA-43), CHCI Chairman. “The Latino community is positioned to determine the outcome of the presidential election, and at this conference we will explore the increasing ability of Latinos to have an impact in all facets of society to ensure our nation remains strong.”
Monday’s highlights include a Tribute to Senator Edward M. Kennedy, an Opening Lunch on immigration, and an Arts & Culture Reception commemorating the release of the U.S. Latin Jazz Music stamp and the passage of the Latino Museum legislation.
Tuesday will feature a Latinas in Service Reception honoring Brigadier General Angela Salinas, a Closing Plenary on the power of the Latino vote, and a Closing Lunch with Geraldo Rivera and Sen. Robert Menendez (NJ) (invited) discussing the “Power to Make the Difference.”
Members of Congress will lead discussions on various issues of importance to Latinos, including summits and plenary sessions on education, immigration, the economy, civil rights, health, housing, labor and technology. The following is the Summit schedule:
